2023 Loonie celebrates Elsie MacGill, an aeronautical engineer who designed and built the Hurricane fighter plane that was vital to the British victory in repelling the Nazi blitzkrieg during the Battle of Britain. Elsie was one of the role models of Ardis Lowney, the protagonist of Breath of the Adamastor. Her other role model was Rachel Carson, who went on to publish Silent Spring. B/ Sampling of
Potential Story Angles

This Sampling of Potential Story Angles suggests ways to frame your discussion of Breath of the Adamastor. For example, you might talk about:

  • A genre-blending literary storyteller who works across poetry, drama, and historical fiction

  • A stylist who blends cinematic imagery with philosophical undertones

  • A 1940s narrative NOT about WWII combat but about the strategy, diplomacy, and intrigue that unfolds in the unusual setting of neutral Portugal

It all depends on where you want to take it.

Book-Centered Angles

1. An Overlooked Historical Setting: Neutral Portugal During WWII

The novel explores the complex political and cultural environment of Portugal during the Second World War, a neutral country that served as a hub of espionage, diplomacy, and refugee escape routes. This setting provides a less commonly depicted theatre of WWII, emphasizing intrigue and moral ambiguity rather than battlefield action.

2. A Marine Biologist Drawn into Espionage

The protagonist Ardis Lowney arrives in Portugal to study sea turtles and soon becomes entangled in Allied intelligence operations and wartime intrigue.

3. Espionage Beyond the Battlefield

Instead of combat scenes, the novel focuses on covert networks, diplomacy, and resource intelligence, including the strategic wartime importance of wolfram (tungsten) mining.

4. The Myth Behind the Title

The novel’s title invokes the Adamastor, a mythic sea giant from Portuguese literature (Os Lusíadas), whose symbolic “breath” becomes a metaphor for the unpredictable forces shaping the story.

5. A Scientist as Spy: The Protagonist Ardis Lowney

The central character in Breath of the Adamastor is Ardis Lowney, a Canadian marine biologist who becomes involved in Allied espionage while pursuing turtle research. Ardis represents a professional woman navigating science, war, and intelligence work, highlighting the expanding roles women played during the 1940s in wartime networks.

Literary & Thematic Angles

6. A Genre-Blending Approach to Historical Fiction

Breath of the Adamastor blends historical fiction, espionage narrative, romance, and elements of magical realism, resisting easy classification. Critics may frame the novel as a literary hybrid—a historical narrative infused with philosophical and symbolic layers.

7. Film Noir on the Atlantic

The atmosphere of the novel consciously echoes film noir aesthetics of the 1930s and 1940s when classic films such as The Maltese Falcon and Casablanca shaped the mood and characterization of espionage heroes and villains. This cinematic influence contributes to a visual, atmospheric narrative style that reinforces the moral ambiguity in wartime.

8. Environmental Themes Beneath the Spy Narrative

Beyond its espionage elements, the story highlights marine ecology and the study of sea turtles, placing environmental awareness within a wartime narrative, an unusual combination in historical fiction.

9. Romance in a World of Secrets

The story includes elements of romantic tension and personal loyalty, complicating the moral choices characters face in a neutral country during wartime.

Author Angles

10. A Writer Working Across Genres

Timothy Paleczny’s work spans poetry, theatre, and historical fiction, reflecting a literary approach that moves across forms rather than staying within one genre. Paleczny’s novel displays stylistic elements associated with poetry and theatre—visual imagery, dialogue-driven scenes, and thematic symbolism.

11. An Independent Publisher’s Perspective

Paleczny is the founder of Cavalarico Books, an Ontario-based independent imprint created to publish his own work and manage distribution. His writing is an example of emergent independent literary publishing, where authors maintain strong creative control over the editorial and design process.

12. A Literary Project Rooted in Myth, History, and Nature

Across his writing, Paleczny frequently explores the intersection of mythology, environmental themes, and historical narrative.

13. A Story Inspired by Real Historical Networks

The novel references elements of Allied intelligence operations and training programs such as Camp X, grounding the story in authentic wartime history.

Insights about the Author’s Other Literary Work

14. Poetry Rooted in Creation Myth and Contemporary Concerns

The Tale of Indigo explores the creation myths, climate change, greed, and humanity’s relationship with nature, combining mythological imagination with modern anxieties.

15. A Stage Play Reflecting Canadian Political History

A Bill to Pay is a coming-of-age comedy set during the era of the U.S.–Canada Free Trade Agreement (late 1980s), exploring the consequences of political and economic change. The play blends personal story with Canadian political reflection.

16. A Literary Journey

Before focusing on book publishing, Paleczny co-founded and led the fiction quarterly Blood & Aphorisms in the 1990s, which was reportedly among Canada’s bestselling literary magazines at the time. This background situates him squarely within a culture of independent publishing.
